Chapter Three

Explosions went off at the collision; the sounds echoed through the whole Ring, hitting Win like a physical force.

He and Aya clutched at each other, but neither managed to keep the other up. They scrambled to stand, groggy and unsteady more from shock than any wounds. Win braced his arms on the pilot’s console then flinched—Aya had grabbed his weak arm in her hurry to warn him. He blinked until his vision righted itself, trying to find his breath.

Through the screens of the shuttle, he looked at the dock outside—the ceilings and walls of the huge open space of the dock flashed with warnings in such a deep red color that it looked almost purple instead.

“The Ring’s been hit!” Raj yelled. “We have to leave! From that impact, it must have been a station fairly close to where we are!”

The stations and huge ships that formed the Ring were all connected, Win thought—no wonder they felt the impact so much.

“The Ring’s stabilizing thrusters must have been employed, or else we might have been sent spinning or crashing down to Earth,” Vasiliy said, clutching at his shoulder as he stood up. “But why didn’t they use anti-debris systems to blast whatever hit us away before it could hit us?!”

“The Champions in charge of that must have been too weakened or distracted by our vaccine to get there in time,” Win said, looking back at the dock. If the others stations in the Ring were as much of a mess as this one, he wasn’t surprised this had happened.

“Raj is right, we have to leave, Captain,” Chan said, turning to him with wide eyes.

“We have to wait for Mackintosh,” Win said, shaking his head.

“Win,” Aya said, voice low with fear, “there’s more debris coming our way—and if I’m reading this trajectory right, it’ll hit much closer to us.”

Win felt terror like a hand squeezing his throat. He moved to the pilot’s console and activated the UniCom to help him as he usually did, but his eyes focused on the station outside.

Finally, he spotted her in the distance: Mackintosh among the Champions, making her way to them.

She cut through the crowd, which parted around her as if by the force of her will. Other Champions, Win realized, were also making their way to the shuttles docked around them.

Raj and Vasiliy took one look at the new symbols painting the ceilings of the station and cursed.

“They’re sending out an evac order!” Raj said. “All the shuttles are open for anyone to grab and the dock doors are being opened so everyone can leave!”

“We’re about to be hit!” Aya yelled, still bent over the radar.

Win slammed his hand on the console in front of him, blasting the shuttle doors open. Mackintosh threw herself in. Win heaved the shuttle off the supports and they shot out of the dock’s open doors.

The debris—a piece of an attack shuttle, charred and destroyed—blinked past them.

It hit the station they’d just left.

The concussive blast from the explosion slammed against them.
